Former President Donald Trump just addressed the National Rifle Association (NRA)’s annual meeting in support of gun owners’ rights. The NRA event has billed as a “celebration of American freedom!” NRA’s 151st annual meeting is held in Houston over Memorial Day weekend, from May 27-29 at the George R. Brown Convention center.
In anticipation of today, on Wednesday, Trump promised to “deliver an important address to America” on his Truth Social platform:
“America needs real solutions and real leadership in this moment, not politicians and partisanship. That’s why I will keep my longtime commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA Convention and deliver an important address to America. In the meantime, we all continue to pray for the victims, their families, and for our entire nation—we are all in this together!”
Other headline speakers at this year’s NRA annual meeting include Govs. Greg Abbott and Kristi Noem, Sen. Ted Cruz, and North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson. This weekend’s event is the NRA’s first meeting since the pandemic and three days after a gunman armed with an AR-15 killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas.
At the NRA meeting In 2019, Trump stated that his administration and supporters “believe in the right to self-defense and the right to protect your family, your community, and your loved ones.” “We believe in the wisdom of our Founders. And we believe in freedom and liberty and the right to keep and bear arms,” he said.
Trump’s 2022 NRA address
President Trump began his 2022 message by giving heartfelt condolences to the lost and grieving from the Uvalde school shooting and named each of the 19 children lost.
President Trump stressed “we must do whatever it takes to keep our children safe” and pointed out how much money is spent on foreign interests like the $40 billion sent to Ukraine.
Trump went on to say: “”If I ever do it again, namely run for president and win, I would crackdown on violent crime like never before which is the way I would have liked to have done it the first time but in a certain way I’m glad I didn’t.”
“The easiest, simplest, most straightforward thing that we can do to save thousands of American lives from violence is to hire more police, arrest more violent, give them speedy trials and get them into jail. And we’ve now seen what the Democrats do when they’re left to run the cities, so now it has to be done right,” he said.
Today is President Trump’s 6th time speaking at NRA’s annual meeting. “It is truly an honor to have President Trump address NRA members for the sixth time at our 2022 NRA-ILA Leadership Forum in Houston,” NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre told Fox News Digital on Thursday. “President Trump delivered on his promises by appointing judges who respect and value the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and in doing so helped ensure the freedom of generations of Americans.” The NRA endorsed Donald Trump for President early in his campaign in 2016.
The NRA meeting comes as the tragedy reignites the debate over gun reform heats up.
The NRA convention in Houston has been met with scrutiny in the last 48 hours following the tragic shooting massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday afternoon, including multiple Black Lives Matter protests.
An alleged gunman wearing body armor entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas with a handgun and a rifle Tuesday afternoon and opened fire, killing at least 18 children and two adults, and injuring others. The suspected shooter was later killed by police.
President Biden and congressional Democrats expressed nothing short of utter outrage in the wake of the Uvalde attack, sharply condemning decades of what he called political inaction on gun control in this country.
“As a nation, we have to ask when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name will we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?” Biden said in a national address Tuesday evening.
In a follow up tweet Biden said, “These kinds of mass shootings rarely happen anywhere else in the world. Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Where in God’s name is our backbone to have the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? It is time to turn this pain into action.”
NRA celebrates constitutional carry
Despite the pushback, the NRA’s resolve is stronger than ever. On February 1, 2022, the NRA achieved a historical milestone as 25 states recognize constitutional carry when the Georgia legislature became the nation’s 25th state to enact constitutional carry.
Constitutional carry, long supported by the NRA, eliminates the need for official authorization before a law-abiding citizen can use their right to bear arms. Currently, constitutional carry is determined at the state level.
